Forum Intégration : l’urbanisation, d’urgence

Le positionnement de tous ces acteurs effectué par Jason Bloomberg, analyste senior du cabinet Zapthink, étant à se procurer d’urgence. Assurant la seconde intervention de la session plénière inaugurale, Jason Bloomberg a dépeint l’évolution de l’offre pour coller aux concepts de la SOA, l’architecture orientée services, degré ultime de l’urbanisation. A terme, explique-t-il, tous les éditeurs (enfin ceux qui resteront) couvriront toutes les fonctionnalités requises pour concevoir une SOA. Mais il prévient : « Vous ne pourrez pas acheter une architecture. Au mieux, vous pouvez acheter l’expertise d’un consultant. ».

The company’s tool can create e-business applications out of existing functionality. “They use business process logic to build a system out of the legacy systems you already have,” explains analyst Ron Schmelzer of ZapThink. “They’ve got the glue to tie systems together, a system for building business processes, and a portal environment for users.”

At this infrastructure level, Cordys is playing in the same field as IBM, BEA, Iona, Sonic Software, and others. That’s a lot of competition and one differentiating technique will be for Cordys to pitch itself as aggressively technology-neutral, according to Schmelzer. That said, focusing on the J2EE rather than the .NET world doesn’t exactly hurt IBM and BEA. “IBM’s going to be a huge force in this market for a long time,” says Schmelzer. “They’re making a lot of sales in their existing customer base.”

It’s important to note that what Cordys is doing isn’t being done by ERP providers, he concludes. For example, “SAP is building the business logic itself, [but] they wouldn’t use SAP to take application logic from PeopleSoft and combine it with something else,” he says.

Jan Baan launches Web services firm

Ron Schmelzer, an analyst for research company ZapThink, said it could be hard for Cordys to break into the market, as Web services software has largely been sold to software companies’ existing customers. But he warned that it is foolish to underestimate Jan Baan’s sales capabilities.

“Jan claims this is the evolution of what he was doing with Baan,” Schmelzer said. “He’s attempting to make business applications work together more effectively, and he’s melding capabilities across these systems. What remains to be seen is whether or not Cordys can carve out a niche among customers that want the quality of IBM’s Web services products, but offer different capabilities.”

Schmelzer said that even though Cordys does not have an installed base of customers to sell to, it has come out of the gate with good technology, a sensible message and sufficient financial backing to make a splash. The key to the company’s success, he said, will be luring customers away from their existing software vendors.
