Event Agenda

Session title Time Details
Session Registration 09:00-09:30
SOA Adoption Trends in 2008 09:30-10:30 Presenter: Jason Bloomberg, Managing Partner, ZapThink, LLC
Jason Bloomberg opens the Practical SOA conference with a quick look at SOA adoption trends in 2008: SOA adoption growing pains, challenges for the Enterprise Architect, and the rise of the Enterprise Mashup. Learn about common SOA pitfalls, including "Vendor-Driven Architecture" and the good money after bad fallacy. Jason then discusses how Enterprise Architects often act as the roadblock for their organization's SOA efforts, instead of the facilitator. Finally, he defines an enterprise mashup and describes how mashups are breathing new life into SOA initiatives.
Coffee Break 10:30-10:45
Case Study in SOA: GE Capital Solutions 10:45-11:30 Presenter: Nicolas Farges, Technical Architect, GE Capital Solutions Europe.
As part of its growth strategy, GE Capital Solutions Europe has deployed a european CRM system to enhance customer relationships and standardize risk & sales business processes. An SOA has been built to support its integration with front office systems, the document management system and core deal decision engine.
  • Near real time integration of deal data between existing applications and a central CRM system.
  • European business object standardization accross businesses from different countries with XML Schema
  • SOA deployment feedback: business benefits, production error management, SOA Offshoring considerations, overall system scalability, semantic mismatch between systems, data quality impact, architecture trade offs, SOA technology stack feedback, and other considerations
Case Study in SOA: ABN Amro - Achieving Enterprise Scale SOA 11:30-12:15 Presenter: Roy Varughese, Chief Architect, ABN AMRO (Global Clients)
  • Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a fast evolving discipline being adopted in many large organizations.
  • Within EA, Business Capability modelling is a foundational tool used to align business and IT - primarily through its use in depictions of current, intermediate and target states of the IT landscape.
  • By linking Capability Models and a suitably granular services taxonomy, SOA can be made more visible at "top table" of Business-IT governance.
Lunch Break 12:15-13:00
  • Enjoy a gourmet lunch
Enterprise SOA patterns 13:00-14:00 Presenter: Francois Lascelles, Director of Client Solutions, Layer 7 Technologies
Discover how XML gateways enable loose coupling in Web service environments. Learn about the interaction patterns between an XML policy enforcement point and other common enterprise SOA elements. Understand how these interactions are an essential ingredient for better SOA governance. All ideas presented are inspired by a field perspective and based on real project examples.
A Complete Strategy for Testing Web services 14:00-15:00 Presenter: Rix Groenboom, Parasoft
During this presentation, we will address the issue of testing applications exposed as Web services or the components of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). We will propose a testing strategy which enables the development of reliable Web services.
  • What are the key risks and exposures when implementing Web Services
  • How to efficiently test an SOA implementation
  • How to ensure that your SOA implementation is SECURE!
Coffee Break 15:00-15:15
Recession-Proofing your Company with SOA 15:15-16:00 Presenter: Jason Bloomberg, Managing Partner, Zapthink
Where the US economy goes, so goes the world's...and that appears to be downhill. Should you cut your losses and drop your SOA initiative, now that times are tight? Absolutely not! SOA is critically important now more than ever.

Is your business flexible enough to adjust quickly to changes in customer needs or economic climates? Can you ramp up quickly to increasing demand? Can you control costs and deliver critical services during economic downturns? Companies that are agile, control costs, and deliver value have proven to have more economic flexibility. Even during economic downturns, SOA can help enterprises achieve these attributes that have been shown to help companies in any economic climate. Learn how SOA can help you succeed no matter how tough the economic environment becomes.

Redefining the Economics of Mainframe SOA 16:00-17:00 Presenter: David Little, Senior Technical Consultant (Shadow Products), DataDirect
Organisations like yours understand that using SOA is a preferred method of delivering sustainable agility - that is, the ability to quickly and effectively respond to changes, opportunities and threats - to compete effectively...

Not all SOA-enabling mainframe middleware is built the same, however… Winning the challenge is not just about SOA-by-any-means, but through middleware that actually reduces the TCO by exploiting the benefits of IBM's System z innovations… Delivering:

  • Significantly lower operational costs - Through the development of patented technology that allows two of IBM's speciality processors (zIIP & zAAP) to be exploited in ways that had never before been thought possible.
  • Dramatic increases in performance - Creating an operational environment with dramatic increases in application performance.
  • Orchestration of Web Services - Learn how Shadow incorporates industry standard BPEL2.0, that exploits the zAAP specialty engine to provide a high performance, cost effective runtime environment for web services orchestration and process optimization.
Networking Reception and Sponsor Interaction 17:00-18:00
